Community Creative: Angie Spice

Angie Spice is a comic book artist and vocalist, appearing at the YPRL Comic Con festival of events this month. In, 2016, Angie won the Australian 24 Hour Comic Book Challenge with Galah Girl and has also produced an autobiographical zine titled Angie in Have You seen La La Land? Her series Courier: The Adventures of Geraldine Barker has enjoyed an overwhelmingly fantastic response. So of course we wanted to learn more!

What are you working on at the moment?
I'm currently working on the 5th Issue release of series Courier: The Adventures Of Geraldine Barker.

How do you describe your creative practice?
Pensive.

How did you get involved in the arts?
I love storytelling and I love drawing so comics seemed like a good idea.

What has influenced you?
I am always looking for insights from other artists, but I think it boils down as to what suits your lifestyle. We are all in different situations.

Do you have a work space?
My studio space is large but messy and takes up the majority of my apartment.

What does a typical day involve for you?
There’s no such thing as a typical day for me, as my schedule always changes and there is a lot to do as a self-published artist.

What would be your dream project?
Working on my dream manga inspired series!

How do you define success in the arts?
Success is following your heart. I’ve spent too much of my creative life fulfilling others wishes and not working on my own projects… you have to learn to protect yourself if you are a naturally hard worker.

What advice would you give to an aspiring artist?
Do what you really want, but start with small goals. Being creative is using and doing what you can with what you have.

What are you looking forward to?
Going to the UK and bringing my comics with me.

Do you have a favourite author?
Currently my favourite is Naoki Urasawa. I’m very inspired by his style right now. He is excellent at telling stories and makes great use of visual elements.

Do you visit your local library?
Yes, weekly to get inspiration.
