The Rock Painting How To...

If you enjoy collecting unusual stones, you are called a rockhound – or perhaps a pebble pup if you are a beginner. You can find stones in all sorts of places – in the garden or in the park, in the bush or by the river. The best stones are the ones you find on the beach, as they have usually been smoothed by the tides. However, if you are concerned about the environment and rock hounding is not for you, you can purchase stones from your local garden centre.

Collect or purchase smooth stones and paint abstract images and patterns on them. Black and white acrylic paint works best if you want the stones to have an added 3D or illusion effect.

Materials:

  • Smooth stones
  • Black and white acrylic paint
  • Paint Brushes
  • Varnish

Directions:

  1. Rinse the stones and allow them to dry.
  2. Paint the top surface of the stones – use white paint for half of the stones and black paint for the other half (e.g. five painted white and five painted black).
  3. Allow paint to dry.
  4. Use white paint over black, and black over white to make lines, polka dots, and other designs.
  5. Allow paint to dry.
  6. Apply a thin layer of vanish over the painted areas and allow the varnish to dry.
  7. Place in a bowl or on a shelf for display.
