YPRL Staff

30 September, 2022

Workshops, Author Talks, and more at the AMWF

“To inspire, connect and support” is the mission at the heart of local group The Right Pen Collective, to bring Australian Muslim writers and books into the spotlight. Their goal to make Muslim writers and books ‘as common as Vegemite’ is quickly gaining momentum through their 2nd annual Australian Muslim Writers Festival (AMWF) .

YPRL is proud to partner with The Right Pen Collective for the 2022 festival. This year’s theme ‘Our Table’ seeks to discover the role and place of diverse writers in Australian publishing, particularly Muslim writers, and the voice of Muslim writers as they explore identity and personal experiences.

Lalor library will host the AMWF’s celebration of Family Day on Sunday 2nd October with a jam-packed schedule of events that attendees of all ages can enjoy. Lalor library invites Australian Muslims and people from all backgrounds to their table, to share their passion for storytelling and their unique voices.

Lalor library is also offering a meet-and-greet with much-loved Australian comedian Nazeem Hussain, as he celebrates the release of his new book Hy-Larious Hyena! Available for purchase on the day.

Some of the workshops on offer include:

  • Writing workshop for kids: Huda Hayek, a primary school teacher and journalist, will teach children aged 10-16 years how to use their real life experiences to create rich, meaningful characters.

  • Drawing workshop for kids: Sumaya Asvat, a Melbourne-based abstract painter and illustrator, will take children aged 6-12 years on the artist’s journey to draw characters into their stories.

  • Self-publishing workshop: Ridhwan Saldin, a respected publisher, writer and illustrator of Islamic children’s books, will help aspiring writers aged 16+ to get their literary projects off the ground and into the hands of readers everywhere.

This is a FREE family event suitable for all ages and bookings are not required to attend. However, bookings for the workshops are essential as places are limited. For more information on Family Day events, guest speakers and bookings please click here
