Yarra Plenty Regional Library, along with event partner Nillumbik Council, are looking forward to welcoming guests to the upcoming clothing swap at Eltham Library on Saturday 24 October.

In anticipation ahead of the event, we asked The Clothing Exchange host, Jenna, some questions for those who might not be familiar with the concept.

How long have you been hosting clothing swap events with The Clothing Exchange and what do you enjoy most about them?

I've been hosting the swap for about two years now. Before I was a volunteer, but then the previous host left and I took up the role. But the swap was started by Kate Lukins in 2004, so it's been around for a while.

I love being able to prevent clothes from going to landfill and enabling a low-cost way for people to try something new. Often attendees will try a new colour or take home a piece for a friend. It's just so nice being able to see the joy on someone's face when they find a fantastic piece.

From a sustainability perspective, do you know any cool statistics about waste reduction or textile recycling that people will find interesting?

There are so many once you start researching, but one that always bring me joy is this one from a Thread up report in 2025, '...almost 60% of consumers bought secondhand apparel in 2024'. It means that the interest in preloved clothing is rising and that will always make me smile.

What are some stand-out finds or moments you have come across while hosting these events?

I just really love to see people making friends at the swap. They are sharing the stories of their clothes and I always feel that we should share those stories more.  It could be as simple as "I meet my best friend wearing these jeans" or even "This was a jacket that was passed down from my grandma, but I just never wear it." Attaching a meaningful story to a garment means we treasure the item more and take more care of it. I think our garments hold stories and I would love to hear them all.

If people are attending a clothing exchange for the first time, what are some tips you can share that will help them get the best out of their experience?

Be patient, sometimes the best things come after someone else has tried it on and decided it's not the one for them.

  • Take notice of the drop off and swap times so you aren't late.

  • Make sure what you are passing on to us is good quality and has plenty of wear left in it.

  • Have fun, there is enough clothing for everyone 🙂

Keep an eye on the event bookings page!
It is currently booked out, but there's a waitlist and you never know your luck.
