Have you heard about Active Arvo?

Do your children love to be active?

Have you heard about Active Arvo?

Mill Park Library facilitates an active afternoon each Thursday after school, during the school term from 4.00-4.30pm. The session is appropriate for school age children between the ages of 6-12 years.

Active Arvo is a free after school activity and a great way for your child to learn some physical skills, play some fun games and meet new people! It is also available at Eltham, Ivanhoe and Diamond Valley Library branches.

Physical activity is great for children because….

It strengthens bones, muscles, heart and lungs.

It can improve children’s coordination and balance.

It will enhance a child’s flexibility and improve posture.

Physical activity is also very important for children’s wellbeing.

Active children are more likely to…

Have a sense of belonging and a healthy self-esteem.

Show confidence!

Meet new people and make new friends.

Share, take turns and learn how to cooperate.

We engage in many fun games and activities

Some of our favourites include:

- Scatter Ball

- Tunnel Ball

- Fun with Hula Hoops

- Floor is Lava Relays

- Musical Statues

- Obstacle Courses

- Fun with the parachute, 10 Pin Bowling and many, many more!

We also love to take game and activity suggestions from our regular active arvo attendees and always listen to great music while we are getting active!

We asked some of our regular active arvo participants why they love coming and getting active:

I love active arvo because there are lots of fun things to do. We always get to meet a bunch of new kids and make some friends

- Phoebe

I really like doing bowling and popping 50 bubbles!

- Eric

Some books we have used to ‘get active’ have included:

ABC Yoga

ABC Yoga pairs colourful illustrations of children and animals practicing yoga poses along with playful rhymes to explain each movement. Pairing simplified yoga poses with alphabetized animals and objects, ABC Yoga features colourful illustrations of children and animals practicing yoga along with playful rhymes to explain each movement.

Move Like a Lion

This illustrated children's book inspires children to get active and have fun as they explore life in the animal kingdom. Learn to walk like a crab, swing like a monkey, and slide like a penguin while learning about favourite animals. Simple exercises show children different activities they can easily do, any time and any place, with no extra equipment required! All of the moves are modelled on the natural movements of the animals and can be easily integrated into the day, with an exercise to do when you wake up, suggestions for ones to do during the day, and a relaxing exercise to help children settle down for bedtime.

Physical activity is also just good fun!

So come along, bring your water bottle, and get ready to move, play and make some new friends!
