Are you ready for a gigantic-humungous-enormous READING summer? Of course!
From 1 December 2025–31 January 2026, The Big Summer Read is back for another year. No matter where you’ll be this summer, children and young people aged 0–18 years old can have fun in the sun or inside by reading! Join children all across Victoria to read, play, and borrow your way through summer.

Take the Challenge and Read BIG This Summer!
The BSR aims to curb literacy loss over summer in primary aged children. It has been developed to raise awareness and ensure all children have access to resources they need to maintain literacy skills over the summer school holidays.
How? By visiting their local library and borrowing books to take home! Join the BSR and access the latest books, exclusive activities, and even win prizes!
Three simple steps to join the fun
- Be a YPRL library member. If you don’t have a membership card that’s ok! You can become a member at any time.
- Join the BSR challenge by registering online or filling out a paper reading log.
- Read and write down 5 or more books you read in the holidays OR track your reading progress over 5 days for the chance to win!
How to log your reading
- Going away? You can log your reading through the official website
- Just prefer paper? Grab a reading log from your local library branch. When you have completed the challenge, return your log to library staff. The more you read the more entries you can have into the prize draw!
What can you win?
Log 5+ days of reading or 5+ books read by 31 January 2026 and you will go into the draw for amazing prizes (both YPRL exclusive and the state-wide draw) including:
- YPRL Major Prize*: One Piece The Going Merry Pirate Ship Lego Set, Pokémon Charizard Nanoblock Kit, 100pc Crayola Coloured Pencil Pack, a bonanza activity book pack full of books to keep you busy creating!
- State-wide Prize: book packs for multiple ages, Bluetooth headphones, a Kobo and more.
To celebrate the Big Summer Read, we have plenty of fun activities happening in our branches over the break including scavenger hunts, craft and more. No need to sign up, simply show up!
