Is your mother tongue a Language Other Than English (LOTE)? Do you communicate with your family and friends in Hindi or Punjabi? Or maybe you’ve always wanted to learn another language but just never found the time? Wherever you are on your journey with a Language Other Than English, this December YPRL are inviting you to our Summer Book Sales where you’ll have the chance to purchase withdrawn items from our LOTE collection. This includes picture books, adult fiction, DVDs, magazines and more.
Yarra Plenty Regional Library holds an impressive LOTE collection in many languages:
which reflects the cultural diversity within our community. In addition to our physical collection, we try to support your needs by offering online resources (eBooks, eAudiobooks, video streaming services) in your native language through services such as LOTE 4 Kids and Kanopy.
But we understand the feeling of wanting to ‘own’ something and keep it for yourself. Outside of the library, it can be tough to find affordable resources in your native language.
This summer we want to pass the joy of language onto you, to help you keep your native (or second) language alive, where you’ll be able to take home books, magazines etc. in your first language. Maybe you want to buy your mum a CD by her favourite Greek singer, or a Vietnamese picture book for your child who always wants that story read to them before bed time. Then again, treat yourself to a book and relish in the beauty of your mother tongue.
