Asphalt activities refers to paved areas where children play, such as school playgrounds, footpaths, paved driveways, and outdoor sports courts. Some children get little exposure to the typical places we think of as natural spaces, such as backyards and bush land, but asphalt and concrete does provide a common space for children to play outdoors.

SAFETY FIRST

When children are playing in paved areas make sure they are safe from vehicle traffic (eg. Parking spaces or car parks are not a safe playing area for children)

  • If children are playing on a paved driveway, make sure the driveway is blocked to oncoming traffic – it may help to park a car at the end of a driveway to block cars from pulling in.
  • Make sure the children wear shoes to protect their feet in paved areas. Concrete and asphalt can heat up quickly, so make sure the surface is a safe temperature for kids to play on. Be Sun Smart (remember sun hats, sunscreen, and bottled water to hydrate).

3D Chalk Drawings

This is a challenging activity that has much more appeal for older kids. They can create block letters that look like they are ‘popping’ out of the footpath or create a scene that looks like something is coming out of the asphalt or going into it.
