Events to send a chill up your spine!

You’ll be sure to find some haunted book displays around our branches leading up to Halloween this October to fill your horror craving, our collection of horror books and DVDs isn’t where the fun ends though!  

If you’re a paranormal enthusiast and are eager to really get into the Halloween spooky spirit, then we recommend you check out the Libraries After Dark: A Haunting Night at the lovely Mill Park Library on the 27th of October – share your own dark tales, photos and recordings, as well as discuss famous cases and stories!

  • Halloween Spooktacular in Ivanhoe: Ivanhoe Library and Cultural Hub is one of the exciting destinations for locals looking to take part in a spooky Trick or Treat afternoon along Upper Halloween Road. This event is hosted by Ivanhoe Traders Association - click the link above for more information and to register!

Trick-or-treating can be excellent fun for the whole family, and your costumes don’t have to be scary – you can dress up as whatever you would like to be for Halloween! But if you’re having trouble coming up with ideas, here is a list of book character costume ideas sure to please our bibliophiles: 

Coraline by Neil Gaiman 

Horror fiction. Fantasy fiction. There is something strange about Coraline's new home. Coraline is an eleven-year-old girl with a large personality. She is seen as a snarky, rebellious, adventurous, curious, and creative girl for her age.

The Cat in the Hat by Dr Seuss  

When Sally and her brother are left alone, they think they're in for a dull day -- until the Cat in the Hat steps in on the mat, bringing with him mayhem and madness! There are so many iconic characters to pick from as costume ideas for this one!


Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl  

Mr. Fox steals food from the horrible farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean - one fat, one short, one lean. There are also many characters from Fantastic Mr Fox one could take their costume inspiration from  - the iconic 'bandit masks' from the movie in particular would be easy and fun to DIY at home, using any old items of clothing or fabrics around the home!

Dog Man by Dave Pilkey
