D&D and Community!
With the release of the award-winning Dungeons & Dragons game Baldur’s Gate 3, I feel the call for a nerdy community. I miss the clacking sound of dice, the shouts of excitement when I roll a natural 20, and even the feeling of having to do basic Maths.
After moving from the United States to Australia, I needed a way to reconnect with others, to feel like I belonged. Dungeons & Dragons was a fantastic way to meet new people and make new friends. I flexed my creative muscles to create fleshed-out characters and traversed through tricky situations.
Thankfully, YPRL has everything you need to run a full campaign or a one session playthrough.
YPRL has a collection of physical books to borrow:
- If you want to learn how to run and build a world, check out the Dungeon Master’s Guide. Or if you’re new to playing or would like a refresher on the rules, the Player’s Handbook is the way to go!
- If you love the Critical Role Podcast and want to dig deeper into the world? Some useful resources to borrow are Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep and The Wild Beyond the Witchlight.
- Younger adventurers can find that Dungeons & Tombs: a Young Adventurer’s Guide is a good resource to create characters and scenarios. Or if they prefer to choose their own adventure, Endless Quest series, including Escape from Castle Ravenloft and Escape the Underdark , are wonderful narratives to follow. No Humans Allowed! Can help your junior readers fall into the fantasy realm where heroes can shine.

Now that you have the resources to play, time to grab some friends and roll!
Fear not brave travelers if you’re flying solo. The Ivanhoe Library branch runs a once-a-month Roleplaying Games group for ages 18+, this welcoming group will help you learn how to play Dungeons & Dragons.
Ivanhoe Library also hosts a Game Night Take Over on the last Friday of every month, with pizza, a wide variety and games, and yes you guessed it – Dungeons & Dragons!
Discover an amazing collection of games for all ages and stages, from Codenames, Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan, to Love Letter, Tikal, Azul, Monopoly, Kerplunk, and Snakes and Ladders at the monthly Libraries After Dark: Games After Dark event at Watsonia Library!
