Jump into the School Year!

If you have a child starting school for the first time, or are going back for a new year, we have a wide range of books on the subject at YPRL.

The below books are just a sample. If you’re interested in more, be sure to check our online catalogue – be sure to go to ‘Advanced Search’ and under ‘Subject’ type ‘First Day of School’ you will be presented with a range of results.

The starting school list by Kitty Black

This charming new release picture book features the presence of a kindly brother offering school starting advice and support to his younger brother. Told in verse, with vibrant illustrations, the rhythm propels the reader along. Don’t be surprised if this becomes a family favourite.

Little Nic's big day by Nic Naitanui

Also available as an eBook (Borrow Box).

Another story told in verse, Little Nic’s Big Day celebrates difference and reinforces the importance of self-belief to help get through a daunting experience. This book also emphasizes the value of curiosity – finding out about those around us and just how interesting they are. Plus, you will learn some Fijian words.

I'm ready for preschool by Jedda Robaard

If your child isn’t quite ‘big school’ ready yet, there is something on offer for those beginning preschool, too. This title shares many of the same themes as the rest in this list (nerves, explaining the drop-off process etc.), with more of an emphasis on play. It is also a board book for those still requiring a little more durability.

Ming goes to school by Deirdre Sullivan

A variation of the ‘going to school’ narrative, this book presents a tableau of the things Ming does when at school. From tea parties to make-believe to craft, all are presented in gorgeous watercolours that have a calming effect.

First day by Margaret Wild

For those readers wanting a longer story with more complex character development, First Day is a good option. The book is broken up into segments according to the time of day, and we follow several children as they navigate their way through it. Another plus is that the story also features a parent going back to school, too. It can be a daunting prospect for adults as well!

The pigeon has to go to school! by Mo Willems

Beloved children’s author Mo Willems notches up another success in this customarily hilarious book about a pigeon who is resistant to going to school. His humour might help disarm the worries of a nervous youngster if they find that they are in the same boat.
