What a watershed moment with the May 21 election! A Prime Minister who nominates the Uluru Statement From the Heart as a top priority in his first address to the Nation. This is momentous and the first important leadership statement for our First Peoples since Kevin Rudd apologised to the Stolen Generations in February 13, 2008.
The Uluru Statement from the Heart is an invitation to the Australian people asking us to accept their invitation to walk with them in a movement for a better future. It calls for the establishment of a First Nations’ Voice enshrined in the Constitution and a Makarrata Commission to supervise a process of truth-telling about our history and agreement-making.
Banyule Reconciliation has been promoting reconciliation with our First Peoples since 2001. We recognized the importance of the Uluru Statement from the Heart in 2017 and have endeavored to have the Banyule City Council support the Uluru Statement from the Heart in their Reconciliation Action Plan. The Honorable Linda Burney, the incoming Minister for Indigenous Affairs, in one of her first interviews stated that Local Government will have a key role to play in supporting these policies. Reconciliation Banyule continues to support Banyule City Council in its continuing journey of implementing its Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan. With open hearts and minds, we can learn our way along these new paths together.
