Celebrate CBCA book week with us!
As we are in lockdown and missing out on a dress-up parade at school, we would like to make this week a fun, educational and exciting week.
We encourage all the children in our community to get their favourite book at home and place it on the front window of their house. People can then walk in their neighbourhood and enjoy a book hunt.
If you are going for a walk, you could even have fun getting dressed up in character. Take some photos and send them to us at ypmail@yprl.vic.gov.au, so we can see you in costume. Have fun!
What is book week?
The CBCA (Children’s Book Council of Australia) is a non-profitable volunteer organisation that actively promotes literature to children. They present annual awards to children book authors and illustrators. They are judged in different categories. Every year, all schools and public libraries get together and spend a week enjoying book week and celebrating the great Australian authors and illustrators. Each year they have different themes. This year is “Old World, New Worlds, Other Worlds”. This also includes exciting dress-up parades at school, where the children dress up as their favourite book characters
Book week is a great way to promote literacy to children in a fun and exciting way. Reading builds their literacy, imagination, listening, vocabulary, concentration, social and communication skills, as well as brain development. For more ideas of activities to do for book week, see the CBCA website.
