Yarra Plenty Regional Library staff member Scott Mundell has been awarded the 2018 Margaret C Ramsay scholarship.
The scholarship was announced today at the State Library of Victoria. Joint applicants Scott Mundell, a Library Technician at Ivanhoe Library, and his brother Steven Mundell, from Whitehorse Manningham Libraries accepted the award.
Their winning project, Augmenting Libraries: Future-proofing public libraries for Virtual and Augmented Reality technologies, explores the impact of augmented realist and virtual reality technologies on libraries and the community. Scott and Steven will research current best practice to evaluate the appropriateness of the technology for public library use.
Virtual and Augmented Reality is an emerging technology that is undergoing rapid growth. Its capabilities align strongly with Victorian public libraries strategic vision, however the technology is not yet widely adopted.
The scholarship will fund a research trip to California to meet with VARLibraries, a collaborative network of Californian public libraries with state and business partners successfully working to deliver VAR technology to their community. Researching these libraries experiences is expected to provide a framework for an equivalent initiative adopted to suit Victorian public libraries’ needs. They will also attend the Augmented World Expo (AWE), the largest VAR conference in the world. A report and presentations on their learnings will form part of the scholarship outcomes.
YPRL would like to warmly congratulate Scott and Steven and wish them every success with the project.
