Intergenerational storytime brings together three generations: seniors, children and their parents. Sunlight Aged Care, Whittlesea Lodge Aged Care, Whittlesea Library, Whittlesea Community Engagement, TRY Childcare, Whittlesea Kindergarten and Whittlesea Playgroup are conducting specialised storytime sessions to provide seniors, children, their parents and/or caregivers with opportunities to interact through play, song, craft and stories.
The Reading Coordinator, parents and residents read and interact with the children by reading, rhyming and finger play. A craft is included in the session giving all generations the joy of coming together, the ability to form new relationships and engaging with one another in a positive and creative environment.
Storytime and play develops a relationship between the all the participants and provides an opportunity to meet with aged care residents and ease the isolation often felt by the older generation. This offers families a powerful and rewarding experience which benefits our local community. Families often make new friendships with the residents and visit the aged care facility after the sessions.
