Connecting young people and aged care residents
Do you know a young person looking for a way to contribute to their community? Or an elderly person in need of connection? Yarra Plenty Regional Library is inviting young people to send messages of hope and comfort to elderly people who are housebound or living in aged care.
During this difficult time, our older generations are more at risk of isolation than ever. Words to the Wise offers a way for young people to do good for their community, and for elderly people to receive care and connection despite the restrictions of lockdown.
How does it work?
Aged care residents create a profile that describes their hobbies, their history and the things they love. It may be as simple as their favourite food or a song they know well. Young volunteers (ages 8–18) choose who they want to create a message for. They may send a handwritten letter, an email, a video or a photograph. Physical letters can be dropped off at the Click & Collect areas in any of our library branches.
Words to the Wise fosters a sense of belonging and hope in our older, often vulnerable generation. At the same time, it teaches young people the value of community and the power of volunteering.
Who can be involved?
Anyone who is housebound or living in an aged care facility can be a recipient.
Anyone aged 8–18 can volunteer to send a letter.
