Pride Month 2024!

YPRL Staff

7 June, 2024

June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate and elevate members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Pride marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in New York in June 1969. The month is a call for unity, visibility and equality and a time to reflect on the setbacks and milestones of the past years.

In honour of Pride Month, YPRL is offering events and activities across our branches:

  • Join us at Eltham on Tuesday 11 June, 4.00pm5.00pm to make a community collage using damaged books and your imagination
  • Over at Diamond Valley on Sunday 23 June, 2.00pm3.00pm we are decorating cupcakes and creating bracelets in your favourite rainbow colours
  • From mid June you can catch our digital exhibition of ‘Queer Icons’ which showcases images from Patrick Doyle’s amazing book of the same name. Hosted by select branches.
  • Show your support by picking up a Rainbow Shoelace Project bead kit from your nearest branch (while stocks last). The project started with Aussie teen Abbie Jane who, with her friend Max Dawn, gave out rainbow shoelace beads in their hometown of Broken Hill to offer strength and support to other queer kids at her school. Abbie was recently interviewed about the project on the ABC by Miriam Margolyes (a certified Queer Icon herself)
  • In addition, we will have curated collections and displays celebrating Pride as well as drop-in activities for the whole family!

Stay tuned and keep an eye on our website for further details. We cannot wait to celebrate with you!

There is so much in our collection to read, watch and learn about - whether you are a Queer Icon yourself or an ally!
