World Postcard Day

A postcard is a piece of thick paper, or thin cardboard, typically rectangular, intended for writing and mailing without an envelope. Postcards have long been a communication tool between family and friends and now more common as an activity as part of a travelling experience, albeit considered a bit old-fashioned now a-days.

Did you know that an old postcard recently helped identify a Vincent Van Gogh painting?  During the period of Coronavirus lockdown letter writing and similar tasks have been revived as a simple but heart-warming way to connect with others. The Letter Box Project is one, you can sign up for. Community groups and organisations that cater for over 55s can help seniors connect through Australia Post’s Senior Pen Pal Club . Kids in the City of Whittlesea are invited to write letters to isolated older residents 

In 2019, postcards celebrated their 150th anniversary Thursday October 1 has been declared World Postcard Day, a day in which people can send postcards, talk about postcards, learn the history and read about postcards.

Teachers can incorporate the idea into their curriculum and postcard sharing website Postcrossing has produced a lesson plan for just that. Postcards can be hand made or purchased from newsagents or online, or search free templates  you can print on card stock.  Australia Post sell a wide range which include postage pre-paid for international destinations.  Include a personal greeting and you can also add decorations and embelishments, hand lettering and caligraphy.  

State Library Victoria hold many postcards in their collection, including the famous Rose series of places around Victoria and the Shirley Jones Postcard collection which includes her military postcard collection. Over 4,600 have been digitised and can be searched in the catalogue under the collection name.
