Spotlight On… LOTE

What is LOTE?

LOTE stands for Languages Other Than English

What is new on the library shelves?
We are launching a new Hindi and Punjabi collection at Lalor Library in March.

To celebrate this range of magazines, DVDs, CDs and children’s picture books there will be an afternoon of dance performances, henna art, refreshments and more. Event details here.

How many different languages do you have at YPRL?
We have items available in 18 community languages.

How do you choose which languages and where they are kept?
This is no guessing game. It’s based on statistics. When over 1000 people in our community identify as speaking a certain language at home we ensure we have a variety of items available. Usually magazines, DVDs, children’s picture books, newspapers – whatever we can get our hands on! If over 5000 people identify as speaking a language at home we build a full collection, which of course includes books.

Do you know someone who wants to improve their English skills?
We have a range of materials including easy reads for adults and conversation groups to support English language learning.
