Gardening at Storytime

A storytime filled with books on gardens and planting has been followed by an exciting bean-planting session in the Diamond Valley Garden of Plenty.

Books we read:
Jack and the Beanstalk
The Little Red Hen and the grains of wheat
How Does My Garden Grow?
I take my shovel|
Dingle dangle shovel
Bugs and beetles in my garden

The children joined in with the repeating sentence "Not me" while reading  The Little Red Hen. We all imagined growing bigger and bigger and bigger like the beanstalk in Jack and the beanstalk. The children had fun helping me make the loud booming voice of the giant. A discussion followed what a plant needs to grow: soil, water and sunshine.
We all sang and acted out the song  "I take my shovel and I dig, dig, dig".
We had fun with our 'bugs and beetles' - performers and the cute little gardener 'hitting' them on the head with a fly swat. When listening to the Dingle dangle scarecrow song on the CD, all the children went to sleep and then jumped up with the scarecrow.

Then we all went to the garden and joined around the raised garden bed. We shared gardening gloves, watering cans, shovels and rakes and planted and watered our beans and lettuces.

Finally we all washed our hands and went inside for our craft session.
