YPRL’s Food for Fines amnesty ran in the lead up to Christmas last year. Recognising that overdue fines can create a significant hardship, Food for Fines was our way of giving everyone the chance to wipe their slate clean while also helping those in need in our local community.
During Food for Fines, we invited our members to donate food items to Foodbank Victoria at any of our branches, and in return we wiped all overdue fines from their library card.
We were overwhelmed with the response to our food drive - and heartened by the huge number of people who donated, even those without overdue fines themselves!
As a result of the food drive, YPRL on behalf of its members was able to donate over 1860kg of food to Foodbank, which will provide 3348 meals for people experiencing food insecurity in Victoria.
Thank you so much to everyone who donated - your generosity is a testament to the community spirit that is alive in Banyule, Nillumbik and Whittlesea.
During the drive, our library staff wiped hundreds of fines and welcomed many members back to the library. We look forward to seeing more of you in 2019!
