The Cookbook of Unknown Ladies: curious recipes and hidden histories from the Westminster City Archives is a blog project showcasing an item from its collection.
This remarkable manuscript contains hand-written recipes from the early 1700s to the mid 19th century, covering one of the most exciting periods of development in the English kitchen. It is a time of technological innovation and of evolving tastes, as the price of exotic imports fell with the ever-widening reach of British trading routes.
The blog includes transcriptions of the recipes, with annotations and a “cooking up history” section where Archives staff set out to recreate the recipes in the kitchen and blog about the experience.
