Celebrating International Volunteers Day

IVD 2019 | Volunteer for an Inclusive Future

Join us in celebrating International Volunteers Day (IVD) on the 5th of December! IVD is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate and promote volunteerism in our communities and organisations.

This year’s theme is ‘Volunteer for an inclusive future’, highlighting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 10 (SDG) and the pursuit of equality – including inclusion – through volunteerism. Volunteering provides opportunities for people, and particularly the most vulnerable, to concretely impact their own lives and play a constructive role in their communities.

We want to take a moment to acknowledge and thank our powerhouse group of volunteers at YPRL, which number over 175 and give over 600 hours of their time each month to extend and enhance our hundreds of programs and contribute to our legacy of being an innovative, progressive and effective library service.  Thank you to our volunteers!

Our ‘Equalizer’ Story

Volunteerism is universal and, when accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or social status, can become a powerful equalizer.

YPRL is proud to have ran a volunteer-led Adult Literacy Program for Migrants and Refugees in 2019 as part of Adult Literacy Innovation Funding program from State Library Victoria and Public Libraries Victoria Network. This program saw 13 volunteers from diverse backgrounds receive training and upskilling to be able to deliver English language tutoring to new migrants and refugees in need. The program has been successful, and we hope to continue it into 2020!

UN Volunteers is challenging us to promote equality through volunteerism and to share our EQUALIZER stories.
