Did you know that Victorians come from 200 countries and speak over 260 languages?
Our library shelves reflect the diversity of our community with items in 18 different languages! In order for the library to offer items – books, magazines and DVDs – in a language other than English there must be over 1000 people in our community that identify as speaking that language at home. Do we have your language on our shelves?
March brings us to Cultural Diversity Week (16–24 March) and Harmony Day (21 March) which is a time to reflect on and delight in our multicultural community.
Your local library is the perfect place to celebrate Cultural Diversity week, with over a dozen events happening across our library branches. From traditional dress and music to cooking, oral histories and larger cultural celebrations – we invite you to experience all that your community has to offer.
We’re so excited to be adding new languages to our collection and are launching new Hindi and Punjabi collections at Lalor Library!
Your local library is a welcoming space for everyone. What better place to celebrate Cultural Diversity Week and Harmony Day? Pop into the library, meet your neighbours and learn more about the people and cultures that make our community such a diverse and interesting place to live and work.
