Books and stories are the best place to bury your head when life gets too hard and the fantasy genre is guaranteed to take you out of your daily reality and transport you somewhere very different.  And I have the perfect fantasy trilogy for you to escape to!

Described as “deviously dark” and thrilling this is my first experience of Jay Kristoff’s world building and story crafting and I loved every murderous chapter of it.

Nevernight: The Nevernight Chronicle Book 1 is the story of 16 year old Mia, a trained assassin, from the cult of assassins The Red Church, who is bent on vengeance for the execution of her father and the ensuing death of her mother.  Mia lives in a world where it is almost never night and the time of day and the time of day that qualifies as night (even though it is not dark,) is aptly called Nevernight. There is a repressive government, The Luminatii,  and religious fanaticism is used to control the masses.  There are Gods and Goddesses who control the weather, sky and sea and horrific creatures who inhabit the sand, Sand Kraken, and a Librarian who is dead, Book Worms who eat anyone who damages the books (and sadly I kind of approve of that monster), and many more varied characters inhabiting this enthralling world. There is also a snarky narrator who gives you the back story to this new world and talks directly to you the reader – Gentle Friend.

This first story follows her training and initiation into the Red Church and if she survives the schooling she intends to exact her revenge.  But her survival is not guaranteed as someone keeps literally killing  the other trainees who are in her cohort of inductees and Mia doesn’t exactly like following the rules.

Be warned there is graphic violence in this novel, as it is after all about becoming a murderous assassin, but it is wickedly delightful and Kristoff pulls surprises at every chapter taking you and Mia to places you could not imagine.

And it ends on a cliffhanger so make sure you have Book 2 Godsgrave ready to go.
