The Reading Fun has Begun!

We are in the first week of the Big Summer Read and already having a wonderful reading time!

The Big Summer Read is a reading program for children and young adults aged 0-18 years old which encourages reading over the summer school holidays. You can find out more about it here or pop into your local library and sign up and start reading! The more you read, the more chances you have of winning one of 30 places in this year’s community prize: an illustration workshop for children with Zeno Sworder!

We’ve begun searching our collection for books which we think are great ways to begin a BIG reading adventure for summer and we can’t wait to introduce you to some authors and books you may not have read or borrowed yet.

Let’s browse some of our choices!

  • Some adult readers may know Anita Heiss for her unputdownable adult fiction but did you know she also writes for younger readers? Her latest book, Koori Princess, is perfect for readers aged 7 – 12 years and follows the story of Teish, a young girl determined to be herself.

  • Baby Business tells the story of the baby smoking ceremony which welcomes a child to country and is written by Jasmine Seymour, a Darug woman and a descendant of Maria Lock, daughter of Yarramundi, the Boorooberongal Elder who had met Governor Phillip on the banks of the Hawkesbury in 1791. This beautiful story is also available on Story Box; read by Bianca Hunt.

  • Ever wonder what humans might be like to say… an animal or a robot? Well, in Undercover Robot, we follow Dotty, a high-tech robot, as she goes undercover for a whole year as a human to win a huge prize. But there’s just one problem: someone in her class might have already figured out she’s not human. And maybe being a human isn’t that easy!

  • Girls Can Fly is aimed at young teen readers or for those readers in upper primary school, this beautiful book written by mother-daughter Sally Morgan and Ambelin Kwaymullina is full of inspiration, advice, ideas, and sayings about life. A book like this is wonderful for summer reading either in the morning or at night just before bed: it’s like giving yourself a warm hug

  • Encouraging children to safely explore self-awareness and respect is Claire Alexander's A Little Bit of Respect. Full of simple yet striking drawings, young readers will love their little journey with The Ploofers.

We LOVE, love, love, love, books at Yarra Plenty Regional Library.

If you’re feeling stuck for reading ideas for Big Summer Read, you can look at some of our other recommendations and lists on our website to help inspire you. Or you can come in and say hello and ask for help – we would love to see you!
