Access to Ancestry Library Edition

Liz Pidgeon

13 December, 2021

Ancestry is the world's largest online family history resource. Access Ancestry Library Edition on any computer in every library or through the library's free wifi.

In March 2020 libraries around the world had to close their doors due to the global pandemic. ProQuest and Ancestry made the unprecedented decision to grant public libraries temporary remote access to Ancestry Library Edition (ALE).

This prooved a boon to family history researchers who were unable to visit the library in person through multiple lockdowns here in Melbourne.

After nearly 2 years of temporary access, and after most libraries reopened their doors, Ancestry has made the difficult decision to end remote access for ALE at the end of 2021.  Ancestry have agreements with publishers and other business considerations that prevent them from offering remote access permanently.

Consequently,  YPRL will be removing remote access points from our website on December 31st.

Onsite access remains unchanged. Patrons can access Ancestry Library Edition through desktop computers in the library or by your own personal laptop, tablet, or mobile phone while in the library.
