Guidelines for requesting Yarra
Plenty Library
to purchase suggested items for the collection
You may ask us to buy books and other materials which
are not held by the library service.
We treat your suggestions seriously, as a useful guide to community
as well as individual interest,
but we do not automatically buy every title or item you ask for.
Your request or suggestion will be acknowledged as received and
looked at against our general selection guidelines and request policy
for the type of material requested.
Books
Generally speaking, we will buy requested books
which:
- are readily available in print
- are published during the last 3 years
- may be older but continue or fill in gaps in series where our
copies have gone
- may be older but of 'classic' nature or enduring interest
- are aimed at a general rather than a specialised readership
We always buy new titles by authors who appear on our extensive
list marked for
automatic
supply on publication in Australia
You do not need to request these titles, simply keep checking the
library catalogue and place your hold when you see the title listed.
Generally speaking, we will not buy books which:
- are published pre 2000
- are textbooks, tertiary oriented, for a specialised or scholarly
audience
- are expensive and judged to be of low sustained interest
- contain content of marginal use to the collection eg, buyers
guides,'infomercials'
- duplicate existing resources held
- are not readily available for purchase through our library supplier
network
Magazines
We consider new magazine suggestions once a year in September,
when we are getting ready to renew all of our subscriptions.
We may add new titles at this time and remove others where community
interest has waned.
Music and film on
CD, video and DVD
We receive many requests for specific music CDs and movies.
We treat these requests as suggestions only, and look at them periodically
when choosing new titles to add to the collection.
We will not place a hold for you against any of these titles
we may buy, but encourage you to check the library catalogue frequently
for new purchases.
Music
Generally speaking, we will buy popular music CDs
which:
- reach the Top Twenty chart
- are released as a soundtrack to a current movie
- are featured on Triple J as an album of the week
We will buy a representative selection of requests to add to our
classical and jazz, R&B, rap and dance music, world music and
ambient listening music genres.
Film
Generally speaking, we will buy titles which:
- are of general interest and released through SBS, ABC/BBC,
or similar
- are made for children and released through Disney, Pixar studios
or similar
- support the education curriculum in some way, or are a filmed
book or play
- have achieved critical acclaim, won an industry award or similar
- are considered to hold classic or cult status
We may also buy a selection of requested 'blockbuster'
type movies on DVD, where there is high community interest, but
may not also buy these on video.
We will buy a representative selection only of requested
popular TV series and be guided in our choice by consideration of
its enduring value, classic or cult status and critical acclaim.
We will not attempt to collect or keep all episodes in a
long running series.
