Notice boards in the library

Guidelines for petitions and display cabinets.

Yarra Plenty Regional Library Service provides noticeboards for organisations and community groups to advertise activities of a cultural, informational and educational purpose. Material must fall within the guidelines of the Equal Opportunity Act and notices therefore should not discriminate against gender, religion or racial background. The library service has an obligation to present both sides of the argument wherever possible on controversial issues.

1. The notice boards are not available for commercial advertising, ie direct advertising of commercial products.

2. Political material will be advertised if it is a factual nature, ie a notice of forthcoming meeting.

3. Material from individuals and government organisations offering fee based programs may be accepted if it sustains the cultural and educational services in the community, eg CAE, Living and Learning Centres are acceptable.

4. Notices advertising skills tuition eg guitar classes, mathematics coaching are acceptable if they are not provided for commercial gain.

5. Only library publicity is to be placed on the information and circulation desks.

6. Personal material is not to be displayed, eg advertising to rent, lost and found.

7. Petitions need to have the authorisation of the CEO.

8. Surveys other than library or Council surveys are not to be conducted within the library building unless they have prior approval from the CEO.

Display cabinets

1. Displays are to be booked in advance with the library staff

2. All displays are to meet the guidelines of using the noticeboards.

3. The library service will not accept any responsibility for items whilst they are on display.

Procedures

Notices will be assessed by library staff to assess their suitability and space considerations. If there is any doubt, the Branch Manager will make the final decision.

Notices that do not have a timeframe will be removed after a period of 2 months. Size does matter! Large posters will only be displayed if they do not disadvantage other items in the noticeboard.

Library related material will only be displayed at Circulation and Information desks.
