Victorian Historical Journal
The RHSV collection,founded in 1909, is one of the oldest and most
important historical collections in the state. All the material
has been donated, with contributions coming from early settlers
and their descendants, from professional and amateur historians,
and from many other writers. The collection is thus of a diverse
nature and includes social, economic, political, legal and cultural
aspects of Victoria's history.

Holds records created by government departments and authorities,
the State's courts, municipalities, schools, public hospitals and
other public offices. Records date from settlement in the mid 1830s
and include information relating to areas of activity managed or
regulated by government such as health, education, justice, natural
resources, environment, transport and the arts.

The Genealogy Centre of the State Library of Victoria houses records
for Australian and overseas research and is the starting point for
family history research; it will be necessary to visit other parts
of the Library such as the Main Library, Map Collection, Newspaper
Collection and the La Trobe Library during the course of research.
Types of records held include indexes to Civil Registration for
Australia, NZ and England and Wales; post office directories; electoral
rolls; indexes to cemetery headstones and registers; convict records;
census indexes; Tithe Applotments and Griffith's Valuations.

and archives in many countries. Currently, their most popular research
tool is FamilySearch, which is available on CDROM and on the Internet
This particular tool provides access to the International Genealogical
Index (IGI), Ancestral File, Scottish Church Records, Family History
Library Catalog, Social Security Death Index and the Military Index.
